Bird Fair 2023

A poignant return to Global Birdfair 2023 marked by remembrance, reconnection, and renewal. This deeply personal journey reflects on family, legacy, and the enduring spirit of Perry — the heart behind Adventure Birding — as we share stories, celebrate Sri Lanka’s avian wonders, and honor the ties that bind us through nature.

A Journey of Birds, Healing, and Legacy

This July, we returned to something that has always felt like home: Global Birdfair 2023, held at Lyndon Top in Rutland, UK. It was a special trip for many reasons — not just because it was our first time back since the world changed with COVID, but also because this was our first time attending without our father, Perry.

For those who knew him, Perry wasn’t just a passionate birder — he was a familiar face at the Birdfair, known for his warmth, his stories, and his deep love for Sri Lanka’s birds. He believed in connecting people through nature, and Birdfair was one of his favorite places to do that. This year, walking through those same tents, and hearing the buzz of birders from around the world… it brought back memories that were both bittersweet and comforting.

Though Perry wasn’t with us in person, he was with us in every moment. In the conversations we had with friends and partners who remembered him fondly. In the smiles we shared as we spoke about the birding legacy he helped build through Adventure Birding. And in the way we proudly represented Sri Lanka — a country he so dearly loved and dedicated his life to showcasing through its birds.

This year’s fair was also the first time our whole family traveled together for it since the pandemic. And we truly mean family — mum, spouses, kids, and even our tiniest future birders came along. Making it a family affair wasn’t just symbolic; it was healing. It reminded us that while loss and change are part of life, so is growth, renewal, and connection.

We spent the days reconnecting with our amazing international agents, meeting new faces, and sharing what makes birding in Sri Lanka so special — from our vibrant endemics to the lush landscapes we call home. We were also thrilled to talk about our growing conservation efforts and the ways we’re working to protect the places that inspired Perry so deeply.

The Birdfair this year felt different — quieter in some ways, but richer in emotion. There was a deep sense of gratitude. Gratitude for being back. Gratitude for the people who stood by us. And gratitude for the opportunity to carry forward a vision that started with our dad, and now lives on through all of us.

To everyone who came by, shared a memory, offered a kind word, or simply stopped to talk about birds — thank you. You helped make this year’s Birdfair one we’ll never forget.

Until we meet again,
With love, feathers, and family,
