Sunil has been a Field Research Assistant for over 28 years and oversees a project on Toque Macaques and supervises the research of other field assistants during the off season.

Sunil is a highly qualified specialist in Ornithology and he holds a Bachelor of Science, Specializing in Botany, Zoology, and Geography from the University of Peradeniya, Wild life Conservation and Management course at Makarere University field biology research station at Kibale National park, Uganda and a Diploma in Environmental Journalism conducted by the Asian Journalism forum, Sri Lanka.

Sunil is well versed in the biology of primates and of the dry zone forest with its wildlife. He also does census and ecological studies of the gray langur.

Sunil has worked with many nature film crews such as BBC, Discovery Channel, Natural History New Zealand, Disney Nature (USA), and the local TV stations in Sri Lanka. Sunil is a keen student of Buddhism and the ancient history and archaeology of Sri Lanka. He plays a key role in the production of documentary films about primates, elephants, and other aspects of natural history.

Sunil is also the Co-Chairman of the Association for the Conservation of Primate Diversity.
